Stops We Like: Penn View Farm
Growing up with Saturday Morning Cartoons, I was led to believe numerous commonplace things to occur, one of which was an oasis in a desert. How many times did the main character find him/herself in some sandy wasteland only to stumble on a single coconut tree with a puddle of water in the shade? Though Penn View Farm in Perkasie, PA, spent the summer expanding, its ice cream stand is now ready.
Before we begin suggesting Penn View Farm in Perkasie, we have to admit some anomalies. First, the farm is off of Broad Street. Forgive us if we conjure images of the Philadelphia Flyers or a basic urban sprawl. It might be on Broad Street, but it is surrounded by rural and residential zoning. The three barn silos reiterate the feeling that this is a bit removed from the suburban sprawl.
Another anomaly is the famous milk produced by the dairy farm. Several of our writers use Penn View for milk, be it skim, 2%, or full fat. But it is their chocolate milk that put them on the map. We will likely never know the concoction, but it is surmised Penn View’s chocolate milk is more than whole milk with malt instead of chocolate. We jokingly refer to it as melted chocolate ice cream. The final anomaly comes in the fact that Penn View still deals with glass jugs and deposits. We bring our glass jugs back, pull the same amount of half-gallon glasses out of the refrigerator, and the price is adjusted for the deposit. No plastic waste, all natural taste.
Penn View Farm's addition has updated the original dairy stand with indoor improvements as well as outside seating.
Recently Penn View Farm commenced construction to expand. Excitedly we inquired early in the summer of 2024 what their plans were. One of the head farmers relayed that they were expanding to allow for an ice cream stand. In late August, Penn View Farms made good on the ambition and opened their ice cream area while extending their hours.
Penn View has gone through numerous changes in the last few years. Initially a cash-only business, they added a credit card machine for convenience. With the addition of the ice cream stand, they have extended their hours. And recently they even added late afternoon hours on Sunday after previously remaining closed on that day. Penn View furthered their alterations by adding metal picnic benches under their trees. A lot of changes have happened at a farm ideally located on Bucks County cycling routes.
We have always maintained that Penn View Farms can be a beacon to cyclists, particularly those who are close to bonking or running out of nutrition. The farm stand not only offers cute little chocolate milk jugs, but they also offer water, candy, and locally made soda. If a cyclist knows Penn View is closeby, it suddenly becomes an oasis in a cycling desert. Sometimes you might just doubt what you’re seeing is real.
Having talked to the dairy farmer at Penn View, it was relayed that their later hours are only temporary. The late season has everything to do with it: ice cream in the fall can be a tough sell, and their employees are returning to school. But should one find him/herself in a bind near Perkasie, and are in need of an instant cool down and rehydration, the Penn View Farm’s new ice cream stand and farm market will bail one out directly. To put a cherry on the top, the cows who produce the milk may require you to pet them before returning to the ride.
