Known for riding off the front of group rides only to be caught in the first mile, we got back on a road bike and realized he must win the Donut Derby at least once in his life. Regularly pledging we’re "not climbers," we can be found as a regular attendee of Trexlertown's Thursday Night Training Criterium or sitting on the couch watching Paris-Roubaix reruns. We have been constant riders of the Hell of Hunterdon in New Jersey and raced the Tour of the Battenkill.

Review: Untapped Bourbon Barrel-Aged Maple Syrup

Review: Untapped Bourbon Barrel-Aged Maple Syrup

The maple syrup process begins sometime in spring. An intricate network of lines going from tree to tree herd the clear maple tree juice to a holding facility. From there it is boiled down to create the recognizable brown liquid we take for granted in the northeast. Sometimes, though, some of that maple syrup is set aside for a grander product. But it requires a bit of waiting time.

Here at creakybottombracket.com we love authentic maple syrup. We admittedly turn our noses up to ‘breakfast syrup’ at restaurants who hope we don’t notice. In these situations, we will reach for Untapped syrup packets to scratch the itch of quality breakfasts topped with golden goodness. Don’t come at us, we don’t care. Breakfast is best served with authentic maple syrup.

Recently there’s been a new version of maple syrup, and bourbon barrels are involved. Take spent bourbon oak barrels, add maple syrup, and wait. What comes out at the end of the process is something otherworldly. It’s maple syrup, but richer, if that is at all possible. It’s dense, but thicker, if that is at all possible as well. The maple syrup spent all that time infusing the flavors of bourbon left over from the barrels to produce one of the richest tasting maple syrup styles out there.

Untapped Vermont maple syrup has produced a limited release bourbon barrel-aged maple syrup. It is absolutely worth it. We have protectively taken Untapped Bourbon Barrel-Aged maple syrup packets on crisp fall rides to complement the falling leaves and apple stands. It’s the much-anticipated shot of maple syrup that fuels cooler rides. Our Untapped Bourbon Barrel-Aged maple syrup came in a gift box, as it should. This spiced up maple syrup is to be celebrated.

The bourbon barrel-aged syrup takes on the flavors, not the alcohol of bourbon. We are curious what happens next to the oak barrels - some syrup producers will give barrels back to distillers to produce maple infused bourbon. Either way, this nutritious tree juice that was harvested in the spring took a little longer to get to our hands.

Untapped’s social media offers several suggestions as to how to incorporate the bourbon barrel-aged maple syrup. Some suggestions include infused whipped cream, mocktails, on morning oatmeal, and the simple stand by of pouring it onto waffles or pancakes. Any and all ways to enjoy Untapped Bourbon Barrel-Aged maple syrup works as long as the process is celebrated.

Untapped states the Bourbon Barrel-Aged maple syrup is a limited release. Get the packets while you can. Once you experience the flavor profiles of bourbon oak barrels infused into maple syrup, you may find yourself wanting only the finest syrup from here on out. But it’s a process one must wait for.
