Known for riding off the front of group rides only to be caught in the first mile, we got back on a road bike and realized he must win the Donut Derby at least once in his life. Regularly pledging we’re "not climbers," we can be found as a regular attendee of Trexlertown's Thursday Night Training Criterium or sitting on the couch watching Paris-Roubaix reruns. We have been constant riders of the Hell of Hunterdon in New Jersey and raced the Tour of the Battenkill.

Review: Rise Up Organic Espresso Roast

Review: Rise Up Organic Espresso Roast

(2022) Leave it up to an office full of people to put coffee amount into perspective. A quick ride to Rehoboth Beach, DE, delivered us Rise Up Roaster’s Espresso whole beans. The unique two pound packaging was a make-or-break moment. As was the coffee itself.

To meander around Delmarva is to seek out one of Rise Up Coffee Roaster’s nine locations, though most of them are in the ‘mar’ locations, or Maryland. The lone location outside of Maryland is at the north end of Rehoboth Beach, DE, in an old 711. Initially an overlooked lot, Rise Up has transformed the spot into an indoor/ outdoor in-person/ online place that accepts anyone looking for a jolt. They even have a bar for those looking for a different type of beverage. Mostly, though, our visits are for the quality coffee. The coffee bags greet patrons along a cubby wall with big and small orders.

It was here that the small bags of coffee, we’re talking the 12-ounce bags, were pushed aside as soon as the two-pound bags were discovered. It was the end of the day and most of the beans had been rummaged. A two-pound bag of Espresso Roast was exactly the selection to fuel a rambunctious house. How odd it felt riding back to the rental with an oversized bag of coffee in the left hand.

The coffee was put to use immediately as the grinder permeated a wafting of ground bean goodness. Once brewed, the coffee flew out of the pot. A second pot was made. The medium roast is a blend of free trade organic beans from Honduras, Colombia, and Costa Rica. The flavor was right down the middle with a solid foundation as well as a roasted flavor that clearly kept everyone coming back for more. Further proof of its sweet addicting taste came around Wednesday when the two pounds of coffee no longer existed and another trip to Rise Up replenished the supply.

What is great to consider is small coffee companies are offering larger sizes in packaging. Sure there have been five pound bags, but a small household may struggle to consume the beans before they go stale. Having 12-ounce packages could be expensive, with the addition of multiple trips to the store. The two pound bag of quality coffee is exactly where greatness lies, and it is hoped other organic coffee providers take note.

Add to Rise Up Coffee’s flashy social media presence, their dominating brick and mortar shops, and their attractive apparel, it’s no wonder the two-pound bag could be considered. To fill it with quality organic beans echoed what we learned with our Rise Up visit: people clear the whole bean shelves daily, and two pounds isn’t as much coffee as we thought.
